Três Cabeças
1936
Oskar Schlemmer’s 'Drei Köpfe' (Three Heads) feels like a ghostly conversation between geometric shapes. Created in 1936, during the dark years of Nazi Germany when his work was labeled 'degenerate,' this piece shows the artist retreating into abstraction. You can spot three distinct forms: a large, dark oval shape, a profile facing right with heavy black shading, and a smaller, floating face above. The sweeping charcoal lines and sudden splashes of red and blue suggest a mind still experimenting with form, even while in 'inner emigration' away from the famous Bauhaus school he once taught at.
