Women on Stairway
1925
Oskar Schlemmer was obsessed with turning the human body into geometry, and this 1925 piece captures that Bauhaus spirit perfectly. The figures look less like flesh-and-blood women and more like elegant, elongated mannequins, with the central figure sporting a massive, fiery red braid that hangs down like a pendulum. These stiff, stylized forms look exactly like the costumes he designed for his famous 'Triadic Ballet,' where dancers moved like mechanical puppets to explore the relationship between space and the body. It's a fascinating, slightly eerie look at how modernists saw humans as part of a larger, structured machine.
