Paul Cézanne

奥维尔全景 by Paul Cézanne, 1873

Paul Cézanne captured the sleepy village of Auvers-sur-Oise in 1873, right around the time he was painting alongside fellow Impressionist Camille Pissarro. You can see his signature blocky brushstrokes starting to emerge here, turning the slate-blue rooftops and rolling green hills into a vibrant patchwork quilt of color. He painted this in the very same town where Van Gogh would later spend his final, tragic months. It’s a perfect snapshot of Cézanne figuring out how to build solid, geometric forms out of pure color—a visual trick that would eventually change the course of modern art forever.
