Gustave Geffroy
1895 - 1896
Cézanne struggled immensely with this portrait of the critic Gustave Geffroy, reportedly sitting for it over 100 times before finally abandoning it as unfinished. You can see the artist's frustration in the result—Geffroy's face looks a bit lopsided, and the books on the shelves behind him seem to tilt at impossible, gravity-defying angles. Despite the rocky process, this piece remains a brilliant example of Post-Impressionism, showcasing Cézanne's unique method of building solid forms using distinct patches of color. Today, it resides in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
