Paisagem do sul

Paisagem do sul by Paul Cézanne, circa 1865

Although Paul Cézanne is a giant of Post-Impressionism, this early piece from around 1865 reveals his wilder, Romantic roots. Before he became famous for his calm, geometric apples, he was painting with raw, aggressive energy. This landscape of southern France is practically sculpted out of paint—you can clearly see the thick, chunky layers applied with a palette knife, giving the lush trees and winding path a rough, tactile quality. It’s a far cry from his later, structured works; here, he’s channeling the drama of artists like Courbet, slapping paint onto the surface with a passion that the Paris art establishment initially found shocking.
