La Clôture

Paul Cézanne

La Clôture by Paul Cézanne, 1839 - 1906

Paul Cézanne, often called the father of modern art, was obsessed with capturing the underlying structure of nature, even in his loosest sketches. In this airy study, titled 'Stakittet' (The Fence), he uses sketchy pencil lines and delicate washes of green and blue watercolor to depict a tree and a fence line. Notice how much of the white paper is left bare? Cézanne used the empty space to represent light and atmosphere, creating a hazy, sun-drenched feeling rather than a detailed copy. It’s a perfect glimpse into his Post-Impressionist mind as he worked out compositions, bridging the gap between fleeting Impressionist moments and solid, geometric forms.
