Nature morte avec bouilloire
1867 - 1869
Before mastering the colorful geometry that made him famous, a young Cézanne painted with a heavy, dramatic hand during his so-called 'dark period.' Here, a crumpled white cloth dominates the scene, draped casually over a wooden table next to a sturdy grey kettle, a green jar, and a lonely apple. The thick, almost aggressive brushstrokes and deep shadows reveal an artist influenced by Romantic masters like Delacroix, wrestling with light and form long before he joined the Impressionists in the sun.
