Venus von Milo

Venus von Milo by Paul Cézanne, circa 1872-1873

Paul Cézanne took a break from his revolutionary landscapes to sketch the most famous armless woman in history. In this study of the Venus de Milo, he ignores the smooth marble finish to focus on pure, blocky volume. You can see his signature hatching lines working hard to carve out the torso and the heavy, sweeping folds of the drapery. It’s a perfect example of how this Post-Impressionist master dissected classical art to build the geometric foundation for modern Cubism.
