The Yellow Christ

Paul Gauguin

1889

The Yellow Christ by Paul Gauguin, 1889

Gauguin took the traditional crucifixion scene and dropped it right into the French countryside of Brittany. Instead of a dramatic biblical setting, Jesus hangs on a cross surrounded by rolling hills, red trees, and local women in traditional bonnets praying quietly below. The artist used bold, flat colors and heavy outlines—a style called Synthetism—to blend the religious vision with the everyday landscape. It's a striking mix of the sacred and the rural, showing how faith looked to the people of that region in the late 19th century.
