Portão do jardim K by Paul Klee, 1932

Paul Klee's 'Garden gate K' (1932) looks like a whimsical sketch on a piece of old cheesecloth, blending Expressionist emotion with childlike simplicity. You can see two orange birds perching on ghostly white trees, while a wiggly snake slithers at the bottom and a large 'M' shape—presumably the gate—looms in the center. Klee, who taught at the Bauhaus school, loved using textured fabrics like gauze to give his paintings a dreamy quality. He famously said 'a line is a dot that went for a walk,' and here, his lines wander playfully across the fabric like a secret code or a page from a fairy tale.
