Città delle tombe
1914
Paul Klee created this haunting, grid-like cityscape in 1914, right as World War I was breaking out and shortly after his transformative trip to Tunisia. The title 'Gräberstadt' translates to 'City of Graves,' and you can see why—dark, scribbled ink lines form a dense, almost claustrophobic maze of buildings, with little ghostly faces peeking out from the shadows. Despite the somber name, bursts of vibrant blue and green watercolor keep the composition from feeling entirely hopeless, showcasing Klee's unique ability to blend childlike whimsy with deep, existential dread.
