Paul Klee

1920

Liebende by Paul Klee, 1920

Paul Klee's 'Lovers' from 1920 is a vibrant, geometric puzzle of two figures melting into one another. Instead of realistic faces, we see a patchwork of stripes, triangles, and checkered patterns in warm reds, oranges, and deep blacks. It looks like a cozy, abstract embrace where the boundaries between the two figures completely disappear. Klee was teaching at the Bauhaus school around this time, and this piece shows his playful approach to form, turning a simple romantic moment into a colorful, almost musical composition.
