Rocce di notte
1939
Imagine looking at a pile of rocks at midnight, but through the eyes of a master puzzle-maker. Paul Klee painted 'Felsen in der Nacht' (Rocks at Night) in 1939, near the end of his life, using jagged shapes in deep blues and murky greys to build a mysterious, moonlit landscape. It looks a bit like a stained-glass window that's been shattered and put back together in the dark, with the title and date '1939 K3' handwritten along the bottom edge. As a key figure in Expressionism, Klee cared more about the feeling of the scene than realistic details, creating a quiet, almost magical atmosphere.
