Porto giallo

Paul Klee

1921

Porto giallo by Paul Klee, 1921

Created in 1921, Paul Klee’s 'Yellow Harbor' looks less like a traditional seascape and more like a blueprint for a dream world. Arranged on a trapezoidal stage floating in a hazy atmosphere, we see whimsical, mechanical boats and strange contraptions puffing out smoke or sporting spiky, geometric masts. Klee, a master of the Expressionist movement who taught at the Bauhaus, treated art like a musical composition, turning an ordinary harbor scene into a mysterious, floating diagram of the imagination.
