Léda
1925
Paul Nash took the ancient Greek myth of Leda and the Swan and turned it into a bizarre, biomorphic puzzle in this 1925 print. Instead of a woman and a bird, we see smooth, bulbous shapes that look like polished river stones or alien eggs huddled in the dark. The intense contrast between the deep black background and the cross-hatched white forms gives the figures a heavy, sculptural weight. It’s a perfect example of modernism twisting old stories into something completely abstract and mysterious.
