Racconto celtico

Paul Sérusier

1894

Racconto celtico by Paul Sérusier, 1894

Paul Sérusier splits the canvas into a glowing, yellow-green forest of ethereal spirits and a dark, shadowy cave where peasants huddle in the gloom. Painted in 1894, this 'Celtic Tale' captures the artist's fascination with the mystical legends of Brittany, a region he explored with his friend Paul Gauguin. The bright, ghostly figures in the background seem to belong to a different realm entirely, contrasting sharply with the heavy, dark reds and blues of the human world in the foreground. As a leader of the Nabis group—whose name meant 'prophets'—Sérusier used flat colors and bold outlines to blend everyday life with spiritual vision.
