Tableau No. 2, Composition No. VII by Piet Mondrian, 1913

Before Mondrian became the famous minimalist of black grids and primary colors, he went through a chaotic Cubist phase where he basically shattered reality into tiny blocks. This piece looks like a forest that’s been put through a blender—trees and branches are reduced to a frantic mosaic of greys, whites, and ochres. It’s a fascinating snapshot of an artist trying to figure out how to strip away the 'noise' of the real world to find pure structure underneath. He was obsessed with reducing nature to its mathematical essence, and you can see him beautifully struggling to get there before his iconic grid style finally took over.
