Architect’s Dream

Architect’s Dream by Thomas Cole

Thomas Cole painted this fantastical dreamscape for his friend, the architect Ithiel Town, and it’s basically a greatest-hits album of architectural history. You’ve got a soaring Gothic church on the left, a massive Egyptian pyramid looming in the back, and a sprawling Greek and Roman complex on the right, all mashed together in one impossible city. The figure snoozing on the column in the foreground is the architect himself, literally resting his head on the foundations of the past while dreaming up the future. It’s framed by heavy green curtains, making the whole scene feel like a theatrical stage set for the history of civilization.
