Mariko
1855
Hiroshige brings the Tokaido road to life in this vertical print from 1855, depicting the post station of Mariko. Weary travelers in blue cloaks and wide straw hats make their way down the street, passing a man riding a horse loaded with goods. On the left, a lively tea house serves up local delicacies—Mariko was famous for tororo (grated yam soup), a dish said to be so energizing it helped samurai conquer the steep Mount Utsu seen looming in the background! It's a perfect snapshot of Edo-period travel, mixing the mundane with the majestic.
