Stack of Wheat by Claude Monet, 1890

Monet obsessed over these humble haystacks near his Giverny home, painting the exact same pile of straw over and over to capture how winter light dances across the snow. Notice the thick, choppy brushstrokes that make the frozen ground shimmer with blues and purples instead of just plain white, a hallmark of his Impressionist style. When he exhibited fifteen of these seasonal variations in 1891, critics were absolutely blown away. It proved that even a boring, everyday farm object could become a breathtaking masterpiece if you just pay attention to the light.
