Tokaido gojusantsugi, Pl.16
1868-1912
Imagine the ultimate road trip along Japan's historic Tōkaidō highway! In this vibrant scene, travelers wind through teal hills past thatched cottages, with a lucky VIP enjoying a ride in a palanquin while others hike on foot. In the distance, the snow-capped peak of Mount Fuji watches over the journey. This print comes from Hiroshige's legendary 'Fifty-three Stations' series, which was the Edo-period equivalent of a best-selling travel guide. Although the artist passed away in 1858, this later edition (1868-1912) keeps his vision of the bustling road alive.
