Groen by Wassily Kandinsky, 1924

Kandinsky created this geometric dreamscape while teaching at the famous Bauhaus school in 1924, a period where he obsessed over the spiritual power of basic shapes. Notice the large green circle dominating the center? To the artist, the circle was the most peaceful shape, representing the human soul, while the sharp, jagged triangles on the right scream with aggression. It looks like a cosmic map or a musical score, which makes perfect sense—Kandinsky had synesthesia and literally saw colors when he heard music, essentially trying to paint the visual rhythm of a symphony.
