Hogarth invites us into a crowded 18th-century London church where the 'Industrious Apprentice' is taking his faith very seriously. Standing in the pew, he sings from a hymn book with intense focus, while a quote from Psalm 119 at the bottom declares his love for divine law. This is the second plate in his famous 1747 series 'Industry and Idleness,' essentially a moral comic strip for the masses. While this good apprentice attends church, his lazy counterpart is shown in the very next print playing games in the churchyard instead of listening to the sermon. Hogarth sold these engravings for just a few pennies to teach the working class that hard work and piety were the ultimate cheat codes for social climbing.
