Orchid Painting
Zheng Banqiao, a famous rebel artist of the Qing Dynasty and one of the 'Eight Eccentrics of Yangzhou,' created this lively scroll featuring orchids, bamboo, and rocks. He paints with wild, sweeping brushstrokes that look almost like calligraphy—which fits perfectly, since he invented a unique font style called 'six-and-a-half script' that mixes different writing styles. The long poems inscribed on the top and right aren't just captions; they are integral to the composition, often expressing his disdain for corrupt officials and his love for the 'gentlemanly' purity of orchids. It’s a classic example of 'literati painting,' where the artist's personality and literary skills matter far more than realistic detail.
