Poor Folk Drinking in a Tavern by Adriaen Brouwer, c. 1625 - c. 1630

Adriaen Brouwer was the master of capturing the messy, unglamorous side of life, and this tavern scene is a chaotic masterpiece of 17th-century revelry. A rowdy group of peasants huddles around a table—some chugging from jugs, others puffing on clay pipes, while a woman in the foreground seems to have passed out from the festivities. Brouwer didn't just observe these lowlife scenes; he lived them, frequently getting into bar fights and landing in debt, which gave his work a gritty authenticity. Even the great Rubens was a fan, collecting over a dozen of Brouwer's small, expressive panels because he admired how well he captured human emotion, even if it was just drunken stupor.
