Christ before Pilate
c. 1515
Albrecht Altdorfer captures a tense moment in this dramatic woodcut from around 1515, showing Jesus standing before Pontius Pilate. Notice the crowded, claustrophobic space filled with soldiers brandishing sharp spears and halberds, creating a sense of impending doom. Altdorfer was a master of the Danube School, known for his expressive landscapes, but here he focuses on the intense human drama of the Passion. The heavy cross-hatching gives the scene a gritty, shadowy atmosphere that really pulls you into the biblical story.
