The Entry into Jerusalem
c. 1515
Albrecht Altdorfer captures the chaotic energy of Jesus entering Jerusalem in this dynamic woodcut, created around 1515 during the German Renaissance. Notice the bustling crowd scrambling to lay down cloaks and palm branches before the humble donkey ride, all framed by a massive, textured stone archway. Altdorfer, a key figure of the Danube School, was famous for his incredibly detailed landscapes, and you can see that obsession with nature even here in the wild reeds and swirling clouds. The artist's distinctive 'AA' monogram hides in the top left corner, signing off on this dramatic biblical scene.
