The Lamentation beneath the Cross
c. 1515
Albrecht Altdorfer was a master of making landscapes look moody, and he brings that same dramatic energy to this woodcut of the Lamentation. You can spot his 'AA' monogram in the top right corner, acting like a Renaissance artist's signature tag. The figures of Mary and John are huddled over Christ's body with a raw, physical grief that feels very real, set against a backdrop of jagged, wild rocks and swirling clouds. This piece is a great example of the Danube School style, which prioritized intense emotion and wild nature over the calm, perfect proportions of the Italian Renaissance.
