The Death of the Virgin by Albrecht Altdorfer, c. 1515

Albrecht Altdorfer, a key figure of the Danube School during the Northern Renaissance, crams a whole emotional funeral into a tiny, arch-filled room here. He creates a sense of claustrophobic intimacy around the dying Virgin Mary, surrounded by a huddle of apostles. You can almost feel the heavy silence as the figures crowd together, their faces etched with worry and grief under the heavy stone vaults. The artist uses incredibly dense, scratchy lines to build up deep shadows, making the single candle held by a disciple feel like the only source of hope in the encroaching darkness. It’s a dramatic, moody scene that shows how powerful black and white art can be.
