Venus and the Three Graces
1496 - 1596
Albrecht Dürer created this enigmatic panel around 1497, and while the four nude figures might suggest a classical scene of Venus and the Three Graces, the demonic head in the corner tells a darker story. Widely known as 'The Four Witches,' the painting showcases Dürer's incredible skill in rendering the human form with pale, glowing skin against a deep shadow. The presence of a skull and a demon suggests a warning about witchcraft and mortality, perfectly blending Renaissance beauty with Northern European gothic themes.
