Landscape in the South of France

Landscape in the South of France by Amedeo Modigliani, 1919

Most people know Modigliani for his portraits of people with long, elegant necks, but he actually painted very few landscapes—and this is one of his best! Painted in 1919, it shows the sunny south of France with tall, skinny cypress trees standing like guards in front of houses with bright red roofs. The style is a bit blocky and geometric, showing how he was influenced by Cubism, but it still feels warm and lively.
