Charing-Cross Bridge in London
circa 1902
Monet was absolutely obsessed with London fog, and this hazy, dreamlike view of Charing Cross Bridge is a perfect example of his fascination. Instead of painting crisp details, he used soft, pastel strokes of pink, yellow, and pale blue to capture the fleeting atmosphere of the Thames River. He actually painted dozens of versions of this exact same bridge, setting up his easel at the Savoy Hotel to catch the light at different times of day. It's less about the bridge itself and more about how the smoggy air transforms the entire city into a glowing, ethereal watercolor.
