Charing Cross Bridge, London by Claude Monet, 1901

Peering through a thick, luminous fog, we see the ghostly silhouette of London's Charing Cross Bridge and the looming Houses of Parliament. A steam train chugs across the span, its smoke blending seamlessly into the pastel haze of yellows, purples, and greens. Monet was absolutely obsessed with this industrial smog, setting up shop at the Savoy Hotel to capture how the polluted air transformed the city's light. He painted dozens of versions of this exact view, proving that even a gritty, smog-choked city could be breathtakingly beautiful.
