Astronomy by Cornelis Jacobsz Drebbel, c. 1597

In this striking 1597 print, the personification of Astronomy gazes upward while a bearded scholar peers through a cross-staff behind her. She wears a necklace featuring the sun and moon, rests her hand on a celestial globe adorned with zodiac figures, and holds an armillary sphere, symbolizing her command over the heavens. The Latin inscription at the bottom translates roughly to her exploring the steep stars of the sky and the high orbits of the bright ether. Drebbel, who would later become famous for inventing one of the first navigable submarines, shows his early fascination with science and observation here.
