A woman rejects a peasant's advances
Here we see a classic Dutch Golden Age scene of rural romance gone wrong. A peasant man is on his knees, eagerly reaching out to a seated woman, but her body language screams 'no thanks' as she turns away. Cornelis Bega, a student of the famous peasant painter Adriaen van Ostade, captured this awkward moment with scratchy, energetic lines that give the scene a lively, almost comedic feel. Sadly, Bega died of the plague in 1664 at just 33 years old, cutting short a career that perfectly captured the gritty humor of peasant life.
