Landscape Album P10
This album leaf by Ming dynasty master Dong Qichang is a perfect marriage of poetry and paint. On the right, he creates a dreamy, misty landscape using heavy ink washes—a style known as 'Mi-style clouds and mountains' that makes the peaks look like they're floating in fog. On the left, he writes a famous line from the Tang poet Wang Wei: 'The river flows beyond heaven and earth, the mountain colors are between being and non-being.' Dong was basically the biggest art critic of his era, and he used works like this to champion the 'Southern School' style, which valued spontaneous expression over rigid realism.
