Album of Landscape Paintings P04
Dong Qichang, the ultimate art critic and painter of the late Ming Dynasty, created this album leaf as a masterclass in 'literati' style. On the right, rugged mountains and misty valleys are rendered in loose, expressive ink washes—he wasn't trying to copy nature perfectly, but to capture its spiritual essence. The left page features his wild, cursive calligraphy, completing the traditional trio of poetry, calligraphy, and painting. Dong was famous for dividing Chinese art into 'Northern' and 'Southern' schools, essentially writing the rulebook for scholars for centuries.
