Retabla of the Trinity by E. Boyd, c. 1936

Three nearly identical figures wearing green bishop's mitres and white robes stand together under a red curtain in this charming folk art piece depicting the Holy Trinity. It's a classic example of a retablo, a small devotional painting popular in New Mexico and Latin America, where artists often used simple, bold colors to tell religious stories. The three winged angels at the bottom seem to be looking up in awe at the divine trio floating above the scalloped clouds. E. Boyd, a famous collector and researcher of New Mexican folk art, created this piece around 1936, capturing the unique, rustic style of the region's santeros (saint-makers).
