반쯤 옷을 입은 모델 by Egon Schiele, 1917

Egon Schiele captures a model in a state of raw, nervous energy in this 1917 drawing, twisting the figure unnaturally with arms crossed tightly over a bare chest. Notice the shorts with their jagged, decorative hems and the way the body seems to float in a void, defined only by Schiele's signature scratchy, vibrating lines. As a leading Austrian Expressionist, he was famous for stripping away polite society's veneer to reveal the raw, sometimes uncomfortable truth of the human form. Created just a year before his tragic death from the Spanish flu at age 28, these contorted poses became his haunting final legacy.
