Our House
1918-1922
Fleeing the horrors of World War I and a severe mental breakdown, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner sought refuge in the Swiss Alps, and this vibrant scene is the result. The bold, electric blues of the shutters and roof clash playfully with the lush greens and candy-pink flowers in the foreground, perfectly capturing the emotional intensity of German Expressionism. Rather than painting a realistic postcard, Kirchner used jagged brushstrokes and unnatural colors to express his inner world, turning his new mountain home into a colorful, almost dreamlike sanctuary.
