A Dervish
Fausto Zonaro, an Italian painter who became the official court painter for the Ottoman Sultan, captures a moment of deep spiritual devotion here. The subject, a Dervish, is shown with eyes closed and hand over his heart, seemingly lost in prayer or dhikr. Zonaro was famous for his incredibly realistic depictions of everyday life in Istanbul, and you can almost feel the rough texture of the man's beard and the soft fabric of his green robe. It's a beautiful example of how a foreign artist fell in love with the culture he was painting.
