Bayram
Fausto Zonaro, an Italian painter who became the official court artist for the Ottoman Sultan, captures the vibrant energy of a Turkish holiday in this lively scene. Three friends stroll arm-in-arm through a bustling fairground, seemingly enjoying the music of the drummers and pipers playing on the right. You can almost smell the tobacco from the hookah sitting on the dusty ground and hear the chatter of the crowd under the green tents. Zonaro was famous for his incredibly realistic depictions of daily life in Istanbul, and this piece is a perfect snapshot of a festive 'Bayram' celebration, complete with stray dogs and a curious little girl in pink.
