Prince Abdürrahim Efendi
Early 20th Century
Fausto Zonaro, the official court painter for the Ottoman Empire, captured the young Prince Abdürrahim Efendi looking far more serious than a child his age probably felt. Dressed in a formal military uniform complete with a ceremonial sword and heavy medals, the boy stands stiffly in a lavish room, embodying the weight of his royal lineage. Zonaro, an Italian artist who fell in love with Istanbul, created some of the most vivid historical records of the late Ottoman court through portraits just like this one, blending European realism with Orientalist themes.
