Fishermen Bringing in the Catch by Fausto Zonaro

Fausto Zonaro, an Italian artist who became the favorite painter of the Ottoman Sultan, captures a gritty moment of labor on the Bosphorus in this stunning example of Realism. Two fishermen wearing traditional red fezzes work a massive wooden crane to haul in a heavy net from a rickety pier. The shimmering blue water and hazy shoreline in the distance transport you straight to late 19th-century Istanbul. Zonaro was famous for his incredibly lifelike style, and looking closely at the rough wood and tangled netting, you can almost smell the salt air and hear the creaking timbers.
