Lake City

Lake City by Fernand Cormon, 1898-1899

Before he was famous for teaching Van Gogh and Toulouse-Lautrec, Fernand Cormon was obsessed with prehistoric drama. This scene captures the 'Lake Dwellers,' a hot archaeological topic in the late 19th century about ancient communities living on stilts. Notice the intense physical strain of the bearded men hauling on ropes, contrasted with the woman standing calmly with a large bone, perhaps a tool or weapon. It’s a perfect example of Academic art trying to reconstruct history with dramatic flair, imagining a rugged Stone Age life right on the water's edge.
