The Little Milk Drinkers
1735
François Boucher captures a sweet, slightly messy moment of childhood in this charming scene. Two barefoot, curly-haired tots are huddled together, eagerly sharing a large bowl of milk, while a wide-eyed cat lurks in the background, clearly hoping for a spill. This work is a perfect example of the Rococo love for idealized, pastoral peasant life—making rural simplicity look adorable rather than hard. Published in Paris in 1735, prints like this allowed the middle class to own a piece of Boucher's famous style, which usually adorned the lavish palaces of Madame de Pompadour.
