Venus and Cupid

Venus and Cupid by François Boucher, 1750-1752

François Boucher was the king of Rococo fluff, famous for painting soft, voluptuous figures that practically glowed with sensuality. In this charming sketch, Venus stands casually while a chubby Cupid tugs at her drapery, looking up for attention. The artist used soft chalk on toned paper to create that dreamy, hazy atmosphere typical of 18th-century French elegance. Boucher was the favorite painter of Madame de Pompadour, which made him the most fashionable artist in France, even if critics later complained his work was a bit too frivolous.
