Portrait of a Dutch Family
1633 - 1636
Frans Hals was a master of capturing personality, and here he paints a wealthy Dutch family looking sharp in their black velvet and giant white collars during the Baroque period. While the parents pose with dignified grace, the two children on the right look delightfully mischievous, as if they're about to giggle or run off into the garden. The scattered roses on the ground and the grand estate in the background show off their high status, proving that even in serious 17th-century portraits, families had plenty of character.
