Back Room Boys' They Also Serve – Power Control
This striking London Transport poster by Fred Taylor uses a clever 'picture-in-picture' design to tell a story of hidden labor. The background features a delicate, sprawling sketch of a massive electrical control room—the domain of the 'Back Room Boys'—while the foreground bursts with a bold, high-contrast illustration of a woman in a bright yellow jacket operating complex machinery. The slogan 'They Also Serve' borrows from a famous John Milton poem, a phrase often used during WWII to honor essential support workers. It’s a stylish piece of graphic art that elevates the technical staff, reminding us that keeping the city moving required an army of people managing the power behind the scenes.
