Orpheus And Eurydice
1864
Frederic Leighton captures the heartbreaking climax of the Orpheus myth here. You see the legendary musician, laurel wreath still on his head and his lyre abandoned nearby, collapsing in exhaustion or grief. His wife Eurydice, dressed in flowing white, clings to him in a desperate embrace, her face turned up to his in a final, tragic kiss. The dark, rocky background hints at the underworld they are trapped in. It's a classic example of Academic art—super polished, dramatic, and emotionally heavy. Leighton was actually the first British artist to become a Baron, showing just how highly regarded this kind of high-drama storytelling was in Victorian times.
